Press Releases

Camden County to Suspend Seasonal Flu Shots Schedule Until More Vaccine Arrives

For Immediate Release: October 16, 2009
Contacts: JOYCE GABRIEL

Camden County is suspending its schedule for free flu shots for Seasonal Flu beginning Monday, October 19, pending delivery of more Seasonal Flu vaccine.

The existing flu shot schedule through November 13 will be replaced by an updated and revised schedule when more vaccine arrives, and the County is able to resume its Seasonal Flu shot vaccinations.

The new schedule will be posted on camdencoutny.com and provided to local media outlets, including newspapers and TV stations.

In the meantime, those needing flu shots should contact their private physicians or one of the retail outlets, such as CVS and Walgreen’s, that have Seasonal Flu shot programs. Call in advance for availability.

If you have other questions, call the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services at 1-800-999-9045.

——-
Here’s a question. How come you can still get the shots at retail outlets yet the county’s well publisized program is suspended? Leave your comments below.

8 Ways to Instantly Calm Yourself

We all have felt anxiety before. No matter how confident and relaxed you are, you know what it’s like to be nervous before an interview, trembling before a speech, or cold and clammy over the pending results of your graded quiz.

The point of this article is to provide you with eight different ways to release this tension. There are more powerful ways in which you can relax (as we will provide in our products) however this article provides eight ways you can use anywhere. Hardly anyone will actually notice that you are using them. You will not have to sit in a meditation position on the floor, or chant mantras to relax yourself… so no worries.

Also, notice the title of this article is not “…Calm Yourself Down”. We don’t calm down. We calm up.

Calming yourself involves not detaching yourself from your environment, but integrating yourself with it while you mentally move inward to obtain steadiness. You should not feel tired or detached. You should simply become “in the zone”: Alert, focused and relaxed.

Chair Press-Up

This one’s great for if you are waiting to give a speech or if you are nervous in a group setting. Simply put your feet flat on the floor. Put your hands on the arms of your chair. If your chair doesn’t have arms, place them on the edges of the seat. Brace yourself. Now, take a deep breath, and push up with your arms and feet as you exhale. Lock your arms – let your torso hang from your locked arms for a moment while you finish exhaling… long and deep. Go limp, but remain locked in the up position. Now sit back down. You feel like a noodle, and everything is cool.

Breathing

Breathing is absolutely crucial to calming yourself. I recommend you do some in-depth research on Eastern styles of breathing, and how to breathe powerfully with your diaphragm. Breathe in strongly and slowly through your nose as you expand your diaphragm. Your stomach should rise, not your chest. Now, blow it out strongly and steadily through your mouth. Repeat this a few times. You can feel the tension leaving your body.

Spread Legs

This one may not seem like much, but it has serious subconscious value. When most people are relaxed (particularly us guys) we have a tendency to spread our legs slightly and take up more space. By consciously spreading your legs while sitting (or standing) you will take up more space, which is what we generally do when we are comfortable in a setting. Perform the action, and the feeling of comfort will follow.

Slouch Slightly

Yes, slouching is bad for your posture. Slouching for years will curve your spine. Slouching for a few minutes will not. This is another habit most people demonstrate when they are relaxed and comfortable: They slouch. So, next time you feel antsy about a situation, allow yourself to lean back your head and slouch slightly in your chair. Once again, the feeling will follow the action.

Power Hands

Powerful people are often calm, relaxed and comfortable in their actions. When they sit around a table, they often do one of two things with their hands: Steepling, or the hands-behind-the-head. To steeple, put your elbows on the table, and steeple your hands in front of your face – like the bad guy does in the movie when he’s going “M’yesss…. Muwahaha…. I can see it all coming together so perfectly…” Think of yourself as the bad guy when you steeple your hands. You know you are going to win. You steeple your hands as you turn over your master plan inside your head. Everything is falling into place so perfectly. Muwhaha. For more of a “corporate” power / relaxation effect, lean back in your chair and put your hands behind your head, lacing your fingers together. This is how bosses sit when they are talking to people who work for them. It has profound effects in making you feel more powerful and relaxed.

Anchoring

This is an incredible psychological tool we will cover in more depth in our products. Your subconscious mind anchors certain actions / stimuli with certain feelings and responses. Psychological anchors and triggers are used everywhere. It is the reason behind many strong emotional connections. If you had a song played at your wedding, hearing the song played at a later date may make you cry. The emotional event was your wedding, and you heard a song during it (the anchor). Thus, the song became tied to the feelings you felt during your wedding. Upon hearing the song again (the trigger) you feel the same feelings again.

Another example is if you became very ill once from a certain drink, you may become sick simply from smelling the drink in the future. The emotional event was becoming very ill, and the anchor was the drink. Therefore, smelling the drink in the future could make you sick very quickly. Anchors are used everywhere, in positive and negative emotions. To use them to calm yourself, develop a specific anchor every time you are calm. My anchor is to place my hand palm-down on my thigh. Every time I am relaxed, I do this, to reinforce the anchor. Then when I need to be calm, I simply fire the trigger (palm on the thigh) and my mind recreates the emotion tied to that anchor – which is relaxation. Pick an anchor you don’t use that much, such as touching your ear, or putting your hand on your knee. Do it whenever you are relaxed, and when you need to become relaxed, doing it will help to put you in that mental state.

Kill Internal Dialogue

There are many ways to do this, but here’s one good technique: If you are talking yourself into a worrisome state, or worrying while talking to someone during a conversation, do this immediately. Defocus your eyes, and open your peripheral vision. Look at two areas ahead of you, to each side. Picture your conscious thoughts in those areas. Now, draw your gaze up from both points at 45 degree angles until they meet in the high-center of your vision. Next bring the gaze straight down, so it is directly in front of you (a person’s face if you are talking to them). Now, picture your gaze coming straight back to your own head, as you return your consciousness to your own mind. Not only does it help increase focus, but the simple effort required to perform the exercise will often stop any distracting internal dialogue you are having at the time.

Centering

If you feel a general anxiety of your whole body, such as being self-conscious of your hands, feet, or body position, this exercise can work wonders. Close your eyes. Take a few deep, long breaths: in through your nose and out through your mouth. Place your tongue on your front pallet, directly above the backside of your upper teeth- this is effective in stimulating cross-lobe integration (and relaxation) in the brain. Picture a point far in front of you. Project your thoughts there in your mind. Continue breathing, and keep your thoughts there, until you are fully relaxed and have forgotten about clammy hands, sweaty feet, or mismatched socks. Once you are relaxed, slowly bring the point in front of you closer as you return to a fully aware state.

Law of Attraction: New Age Fantasy?

Have you heard about the Law of Attraction?

This law states that whatever your predominant thoughts are that is what you will attract. If you constantly think about all your aches and pains and how poor your health is then you will attract more of the same. On the other hand, if you concentrate on abundant health and imagine yourself healthy and full of energy then you will attract health into your life.

Some people would argue that the law of attraction is just wishful thinking and could actually be dangerous. They feel that people who believe in this so-called law might for example, just hope that a tumor would go away rather than getting proper medical treatment. Or they might wish that their bills would go away and end up in bankruptcy rather than upgrading their skills and finding a new job which would enable them to pay their debts.

Both the critics and proponents would be missing the larger picture if they believed in the above. Visualizing an ideal outcome is only the first step in the law of attraction. We live in a material world so inspired action is also usually required. Nevertheless, the visualizing stage will quite often reveal possibilities that were unknown or even seem to create synchronous events that seem almost magical.

Let’s look at a difficult situation such as that of a poor African country. One could feel that since there is no food in the environment it is impossible to attract it. Yes, I agree that wishing for some food will not make it magically appear. But, if an individual was able to stay positive in that very difficult environment they would have the best opportunity to become aware of and avail themselves of an air-drop of refugee supplies. Victor Frankl did pretty much the same thing in the German concentration camps. Yes, it was grim and he did not make the concentration camps disappear but by working with his consciousness he was able to change his internal condition. He was then in a much better position to help himself and others.

But how about actually attracting something? For example, you decide that you would like an extra five thousand dollars next month. You begin to visualize it and emotionally feel what it would be like to have that extra money. Then a week later you get a letter that a distant relative has passed a way and left you five thousand dollars in their will. This is not at all an unusual circumstance and most people probably could point to a few in their own lives. Is this just a coincidence a fluke, a bit of good luck? Or is something else going on?

This is where it gets interesting. Recent studies in such diverse fields as quantum physics, brain scan imaging, and distance healing, seem to be indicate that something is going on in terms of our ability to affect things at a distance. Larry Dossey, the well known physician who has done a great deal of work in studying distance healing through prayer, feels that medicine has progressed through three distinct stages.

Stage 1 is the traditional 19th century mechanistic view of the body. Stage 2 is the age of “psychosomatic medicine” which believes that the mind can influence the body. Stage 3, which we are just entering, proposes that consciousness is not confined to one’s individual body. In other words, an individual’s mind may affect not just his or her body, but the body of another person, event or object at a distance.

Perhaps it is in these new areas of research that we will begin to understand the Law of Attraction and whether or not it has true validity.

It’s Easy to Become Punctual – Honest!
By Trevor Johnson

William Shakespeare once wrote, “Better three hours too soon than a minute too late.”

Being on time means that you know how to plan a schedule for yourself and your activities for the day. As a result punctual people are more or less successful people, as they don’t miss opportunities which come their way. In our daily life, it’s a good idea to show punctuality in every part like getting to school on time, catching the right bus at the bus top, or getting to work everyday at the same time etc.

If you are not punctual, then you will start feeling the effects at the start of the day itself. It will start when you miss your bus, and then continue with reaching your work place late and of course, completing your working hour’s later because of your late arrival and so on. As a result, f you are not punctual you are a loser! But it’s not necessary for you to be late every time! Just a little bit of effort and time management and you should be able to be on time for all your appointments for the day.

1. Another good point you have to remember is to recognize your capabilities. If you know the amount of work you can do, then you can take on extra tasks. But if you work slowly then you should remember to take on only the few tasks which you will be able to perform on time.

2. Make sure that your deadlines are communicated to your co-workers so that they know you are not available for further work or responsibilities until you finish current responsibilities.

3. Never show off that you can do several tasks at the same time and can perform many duties in a small time period. If you cannot manage, you will show an overall inability to perform well; and none of the tasks you do will be of the best quality.

4. You should have a wrist watch so that you can keep track of time and your appointments and act accordingly.

5. Keep yourself 15 minutes early for everything and that’s how you won’t have to rush anywhere to get work done in haste.

6. Plan your things first then move ahead: Don’t let unexpected events and things to interfere your schedule.

Try to keep these things in your mind. They are very easy to adopt and you will very easily be punctual in the future.

Metabolism is the rate by which the body produces and consumes energy and calories and is partly determined by the amount of muscle we have. The more muscle the higher the metabolic rate.

Several factors affect the metabolism such as the amount of muscle tissue, frequency of meals, stress levels, activity levels, diet and stress. Loss of muscle due to not enough physical activity slows down the metabolic rate. The same applies with a decrease in physical activity that comes naturally with old age.

Here are 10 quick tips to speed up your metabolism:

1. Become more active. The amount of muscle a person has is a very strong determinant in the ability to burn calories and shed fat. So it goes without saying that exercise is essential. Build strength and resistance by working out at least twice a week, preferably with weights. Do easy exercises in between workouts. Simple tasks such as walking the dog and using the stairs in place of the elevator can take off calories. The key is to match the amount of eating to the amount of activity one has.

2. Don’t skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day. Surprisingly, the ones who eat breakfast are thinner than the ones who do not. Metabolism can slow down considerably if breakfast is taken during mid-morning or if one waits until the afternoon to eat.

3. Eat smaller meals. It is advisable to consume 4 to 6 small meals that are timed 2 to 3 hours apart.

4. Avoid sugar – it’s addictive. Sugar enables the body to store fat. A person should eat food that helps sustain an even level of blood-sugar. Additionally, exercising 2-3 times a week should be in order to stabilize blood sugar.

5. Eat spicy foods and include more energy foods in the diet. Spicy meals with peppers can increase the metabolism. Energy foods include fruit, vegetables, beans and whole grains.

6. Plan meals in advance. Always prepare the right amount of food to be consumed at the regular intervals. Don’t snack between meals.

7. Never skip meals. People tend to skip meals in order to lose weight, which is a big mistake since it slows down metabolism.

8. Get enough sleep. According to research, it is riskier for people who do not get enough sleep to gain weight. Also, muscles are regenerated during the last couple of hours of slumber.

9. Drink plenty of water. Water flushes out toxins that are produced whenever the body burns fat. The majority of bodily functions involve water, and lack of water causes the body system’s operations to decrease its speed, and produces unneeded stress as a result.

10. Ditch the stress! Stress, whether it’s physical or emotional, triggers the release of a steroid called cortisol, which decreases metabolism. Also, people tend to eat excessively when stressed.

Achieving the desired body weight is never impossible if one has the determination and patience needed to stabilize the metabolism level, which plays an important role in weight loss. A person needs to realize that eating right and working out should be a way of life and not something you do for a few months before going back to old eating habits.

This can lead to sleepless nights which creates further anxiety that can make life feel more unbearable.

Eventually this can create a feeling of being overwhelmed or stressed out. However, there are lifestyle changes that you can make in order to reduce your stress and promote relaxation in your life:

1) Get regular massages
We all know about the reputed benefits of a massage in aiding relaxation of the body and mind. Whilst you could get a partner or close friend to give your shoulders, back or feet a good rub down, to truly feel long-term benefits you should enlist the services of a trained professional to give you regular massages.

Don’t think of this as an indulgent treat but rather an essential part of your well-being routine. For as well as relaxing the muscles (and making you feel as chilled out as an Eskimo), the benefits of regular massage include improved blood flow and a boosted immune system.

2) Hang up your phone
When you leave the office you need to be able to switch off from work – and that includes your phone! This is important to do as once your work colleagues get into the habit of being able to contact you at all hours they will. Remember, the phone is there for your convenience, not just the caller’s.

3) Compile some chillout tunes
Put together or buy a CD of relaxing music to ease your mind and help you switch off from the outside world. Research has shown that even from the womb relaxing/classical music can be beneficial in promoting well-being.

4) Read a good book
Emily Dickinson wrote, ” There is not frigate like a book to take us lands away,” which is a great way to sum up the way in which reading a good book can help you to get your mind off your worries – if only for a while.

5) Practice yoga
Yoga is a great way to escape from everything going on around by taking you into your own little world. As well as being a good form of working out, it can help you to build your self esteem and confidence, helping you to bring about a positive change in your life.

6) Drink herbal teas
Herbals teas such as peppermint and chamomile make better options than caffeine-infused drinks such as tea and coffee. The key to helping you to adapt your choice is to try different types until you find flavours which suit you taste buds. Many varieties are now widely supplied at most supermarkets.

7) Eat Right
All too often, and perhaps because of the hype of all the fad diets out there, people underestimate the impact of diet on our health and well-being. Simple steps such as cutting down on caffeine, alcohol and food high in fat or calories can produce beneficial effects such as helping you to feel healthier and less highly strung out or irritable.

 Work Out
Now we’re not talking about hours every day or “going for the burn.” If you haven’t exercised for a while you will want to take it easy and start off with manageable sessions. As well as the physical benefits of exercise, regular sessions can help to reduce your anxiety levels as “feel good” hormones are released.

9) Breathe
It’s just like they say when you have a moment in which you feel you’re going to have a meltdown. Take a deep breath and count to ten. Whilst this is a good start, you should aim to set aside time to sit down relax and focus on your breathing to the point that it slows down and feel more in control.

10) Get back to basics
Escape the hustle and bustle of your everyday stresses and strains by getting out to the countryside or a place close to nature. This can often provide the space you need to clear your mind, find focus and perhaps inspiration.
